Description
The Altenberg Spätlese, made from vines over 70 years old, initially appears somewhat closed, with restrained smoky citrus notes. With aeration, the wine opens up tremendously in the glass: opulent and incredibly profound botrytis aromas, with notes of raisins, dried apricots, ripe mango, and baby pineapple – all underpinned by dark minerality. On the palate, it is enormously concentrated and complex, with a dense, oily texture, ripe acidity, and again, expressive mineral nuances. The wine already displays impressive length and will greatly benefit from years of cellaring to develop its full potential.
The opulence of this wine makes it particularly appealing when combined with rich dishes such as fried goose liver, a tarte tatin, or spicy cheeses like Roquefort.
ALTENBERG | VDP.GROSSE LAGE®
Like a monumental cliff face, the Kanzemer Altenberg vineyard stands in perfect south-southeast orientation. As in all Othegraven vineyards, Devonian slate is the defining element, in the Altenberg with traces of iron oxide. A noble wine grows here, mineral and warm at the same time, with inner grandeur and utterly self-contained.
