Steile Weinbergslagen an der Saar im Anbaugebiet Mosel – Herkunft für Weißwein Mosel

Our sites

What do the Matterhorn and Altenberg have in common?

Both require the scaling of a 65 degree gradient. Except: on the dizzying steep hillsides of the Kanzemer Altenberg, each vine still needs to be tended individually, by hand.

The Responsibility of grand crus

We are proud to call several of the finest sites on the Saar our own. Each of them contains its own unique slate soil and distinctive microclimate, coming together as grand terroir.

Kanzemer Altenberg an der Saar – Herkunft klassischer Saar Rieslinge im Anbaugebiet Mosel

ALTENBERG, Kanzem

VDP.GROSSE LAGE®

Rising like a steep, monumental wall, the Kanzemer Altenberg faces due south-by-southeast. As in all Othegraven sites, Devonian slate is the prime element, with traces of iron oxide on the Altenberg. It is a cradle of noble wines that are mineral and warm, with tremendous presence and quiet confidence.

BOCKSTEIN, Ockfen

VDP.GROSSE LAGE®

The silvergray slate slope of the Ockfener Bockstein, a classic Saar site, opens up like an amphitheater. As befits such a setting, its wines offer an unmistakable Riesling fruitiness, fine spice, rich character and plentiful nuance.

GROSSER HERRENBERG, Wawern - Monopol

VDP.GROSSE LAGE®

The GROSSER HERRENBERG in Wawern is a monopole vineyard of the von Othegraven winery and represents the 1.65-hectare, upper section of the Wawerner Herrenberg. The vineyard, with slopes of up to 40 degrees, is characterized by a lower clay content compared to the VDP.ERSTE LAGE and a dominant Devonian slate content. The vineyard was planted in 1964. Riesling wines produced from this vineyard are considered very mineral and are characterized by a special tension in their flavor profile.

Moselwein aus der Steillage Wiltinger Kupp an der Saar im Anbaugebiet Mosel vom Weingut von Othegraven

KUPP, Wiltingen

VDP.GROSSE LAGE®

Heavily weathered, fine grained, light in coloration: a perfect description for the slate soil of the Wiltinger Kupp. It brings forth wine of an entirely different type, brilliant and lean - delicate flavors interwoven into an aromatic fruit basket.

Wawerner Herrenberger - Monopoly

VDP.ERSTE LAGE®

The Wawerner Herrenberger covers the lower 2-hectare section of von Othegraven's monopole vineyard. With slopes of up to 35 degrees, the vineyard was carefully replanted in 2011 after extensive recultivation. The soil is composed of highly weathered Devonian slate with an unusually high clay content for the Saar, lending the wines a unique structure and minerality. Like the GROSSER HERRENBERG, this site enjoys the highest number of sunshine hours in the Saar region, allowing the grapes to achieve perfect ripeness and exceptional aromatic complexity.
